Hey gang,
A month ago I wrote a post categorizing my top ten albums I was looking forward to in 2008. Since I wrote that post, I have obtained five of the top ten albums and most of them were everything I was hoping for and more. I want to take time to review each and every one on my blog and towards the end of the year, I will post again with what I think of their adjusted rankings.
That being said, the first album I want to review is Starfield’s “I Will Go”.
Thanks to my new friend Matt over at EMI music, I got my hands on an advance copy of the album, (it doesn’t come out until March 25th), and I gotta tell you, this album is off the chain! I love any of Starfield’s music, so I’m kind of biased going into this review, but I was trying to keep an objective mind about this album. “I Will Go” starts off with the melodic undertones similar to Starfield’s 2004 self-titled album and the opening track, “From the Corners of the Earth,” is my least favorite track on the album. I think they were smart to put this one on the record first, because with it being first it becomes the least forgettable track. Now, don’t get me wrong, I like it, but it doesn’t capture me like the other ones do on the album.
After the opening track, Tim Neufeld and company take us on a passionate worship experience to the throne of the Father and it’s been a long time since I’ve heard worship songs that capture the heart of the worshiper so delicately and weave an atmosphere of quiet symphonic melodies that powerfully proclaim the glory and splendor of God.
“Hosanna”, “Reign in Us”, “I Will Go”, “Holy is Our God”, and “Remain” are all songs that define this album and ones I would definitely use in a worship service. They are top-notch songs with simple, easy-to-remember melodies that would be great for singing along with. The song “Remain”, remained in my head for most of the afternoon after I listened to it just once!
After “Remain,” the album takes a slight turn to a more rock atmosphere, with “The Loveliest Sound” in which Starfield begins to really emulate the band “Switchfoot”. As a matter of fact if you told me it was Switchfoot’s new song, I might have believed you if I only heard a portion of it. This is a great song about worshiping God and I love it.
Next, comes the anthem driven duo, “Great in All the Earth” and “All We Need”. These songs are the core of who Starfield is and remind me of some on their previous two albums, which are great if you haven’t heard them.
They close the album out with “Hiding Place” which is an intimate worship song to God that showcases the transparency of our dependence on God in troubled times. This song is the softest on the album, as you would expect, and in my opinion, one of the better songs on the album.
All in all, I can’t find any place to fault this album except for maybe the first track. And the thing is, that song is growing on me the more I listen to it. So, I have to throw down all pretenses and give this album what it deserves, and that’s two thumbs up and five out of five stars.
