Josh Wilson – Trying to Fit the Ocean in a Cup – Review

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008   Uncategorized

Josh Wilson releases his album “Trying to Fit the Ocean in a Cup” on April 29, 2008. Here is a clever little song from that album, that muses over the limitations of a “3 Minute Song” (And you guessed it it clocks in at exactly 3 minutes!) Review coming soon!

Delirious? – Kingdom of Comfort Review

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008   Uncategorized

Save me save me from the kingdom of comfort where i am king.
From my unhealthy lust of material things

This is how the title track from the new Delirious? album opens up.

Listen to it below

Kingdom of Comfort

Kingdom of Comfort is the newest offering from the modern-worship UK band “Delirious?.” Their new effort opens strongly with the haunting title track “Kingdom of Comfort”. This song sets the tone for this new album with Martin Smith’s attempt to define why we as a culture have become entrenched in what we “need” to be comfortable, only to find that all we need is really God.

Next, the band moves into more familiar territory with the rock driven songs “God is Smiling”,“Give What You’ve Got”, and “Love Will Find a Way.”These are phenomenal worship songs that I would strongly consider using in worship services and I especially like Stu G’s (guitar player) riffs in “Give What You’ve Got.” They may be some of the best I’ve heard since Delirious’ “World Service” album in 2003.

After “Love Will Find a Way” comes the Aboriginal sounding “Eagle Rider.” To be honest, this may be the one song on the album that I really don’t get. It doesn’t fit with the rest of the album, or the sound of Delirious?, so maybe it’s just me, but I don’t get it.

Moving on, we discover the wonderful sounds of “We Give You Praise” which is, (what I consider to be) the best song on the album, both lyrically and musically.

We sing glory in the darkness, there you shine.
Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine

Absolutely awesome song.

Next, the modern hymn, “How Sweet the Name.” I went back about twenty years to find myself sitting in a pew on a Sunday Morning, worshiping to this one. Our church has a blended service and this song would connect with people young and old. It is a beautifully simple song.

We round out the album with the songs “Wonder”, “Break the Silence”, “Stare the Monster Down,” (a song about never letting the devil get under your skin) “All God’s Children”, and “My Soul Sings”, which are all vintage examples of why Delirious? is still going strong after all these years.

All in all, this is a phenomenal effort from a worship band that I had honestly written off. I used to love Delirious?’s early albums, but I fell off of their bandwagon after a while. This album brings back the band I have long missed. Four out of five stars from me.

As a side-note, this Sunday at Nexus, we’ll be giving away a free copy of this CD for one lucky student to listen to, so you better be there to join in the festivities!
