A Parable Based on Matthew 7:8

Ok so I have been reading through Matthew today (I gave my students on Sunday morning the homework to read one of the first 3 Gospels, so I figured I needed to as well).  Well I came to this passage in the Sermon on the Mount. It is Matthew 7:8 and it says this, “For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.”  This got me thinking about all the people that don’t knock on the door. It got me thinking about a story that I shall tell right now.

It all starts with a man. This man one day, decided to build a house.  He built everything in that house. All the cabinets and furniture, even down to the plumbing and electric. He did it all. When it was finished, what else should a man do, but live in the house that he created,so this is what he did.

The people around this man would watch him everyday building the house. As it became more finished, they began to see him less and less. Until one day it was completed and they saw him no more. Time went on and people came and left the neighborhood. All the while, the man stayed in his house.

Eventually, people came to believe that there was no man living in the house. “We don’t see the man,” said the people.  ”In fact, we don’t even think that a man ever existed.  We think that this house instead was formed from a tree. Over millions of years, this tree eventually morphed into a house.” They tested the tree with all sorts of fancy gadgets and used charts and graphs to illustrate their point. They tested the siding of the house to find out that it was indeed made of wood proving that it had evolved from a tree, and that the man didn’t exist.

All the while, the man watched out from his house.  All this time, no one had ever bothered to knock on his door. If only they would knock, he would answer, and they would see that he was real.

So often we run around trying to prove that God isn’t real. I mean we can’t see God so surely He isn’t there, right?  Well, in reality, while we attempt to prove that He isn’t there, we completely forget to even ask. If instead of asking if He isn’t there, we need to ask if He is. And when we knock, He will answer.
